Orthodoxy: Right worship. Correct thinking. Sound or correct in opinion or doctrine, especially theological or religious doctrine.
Years ago, as one of manned space missions was returning to earth, I recall the broadcaster vividly articulating the three possibilities that could occur as the capsule re-entered the atmosphere: 1) a successful reentry by entering at precisely the correct angle, 2) bouncing off the atmosphere into outer space with no ability to ever again re-enter - lost in space or 3) entering too sharply causing the capsule to overheat and burn.
Precision. It is a requirement in so many risky ventures. Why would we opt to be carefree and haphazard with our eternal destination on the line?
For two thousand years, the Orthodox Church has emphasized the importance of precision in our thought. This precision came about by men and women who struggled with the meaning of life. They came to conclusions that others had also reached many years earlier. They concluded these truths in counsel, based on a profound and precise understanding of scripture. The conclusions reached were consistent with the teachings of Christ, the Apostles, the Prophets and of Theologians and Martyrs. The necessity of precision was imperative with so much at stake.
In the Durham/Chapel Hill/Research Triangle area, we are known for our precision in many areas of Science and Technology. We believe that St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church is strategically located. Not just for those who practice in their chosen fields a preciseness, but for all who consider their eternal destiny. A destiny that requires a precise understanding of what has been taught through the ages.
We invite you to join us. We celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ every Sunday with the Divine Liturgy. Jesus Christ must be experienced and the best way to do so is to encounter Him at the Divine Liturgy. It is there where we encounter Divine Love.
